Kuroiwa Medaka Reviews:
This is one of those uncommon mangas where I feel like the love triangle misunderstanding (while it lasted) actually added value to the adorability of the story. Mona doesn’t want to admit to himself that he’s falling in love with Medaka and justifies trying to get her attention as just trying to prove that he can charm anyone. Medaka is charmed by him but forces himself to suppress that part of himself in order to remain pure for working at a temple. This dynamic creates some cute and funny moments.
The most iffy part of the manga is probably the way that it sorta feeds into some problematic gender role stereotypes. Men (through Medaka) are portrayed as ideally trying to protect women. Women (through Mona) are portrayed as trying to manipulate and charm men, to get attention. Unfortunately, this attitude that beauty and friendliness should be equated with intentional charming is what can lead to victim blaming in cases of unwanted attention or rape. And it can lead men to justify shitty behavior by telling themselves that the woman was in some way acting as though he wanted it. Though this manga obviously isn’t dealing with anything that heavy or serious. It’s just meant to be adorable and fun. And it is. But it shouldn’t be forgotten that the Temptress character type this manga plays on shouldn’t be treated very seriously. The default in real life should assume that people aren’t attempting to tempt others.
